In this mini-course, which consists of five videos totaling ~29 minutes, you'll learn the ins and outs of verification of insurance benefits. You'll also enjoy a laugh or two.
What you'll get:
- Video 1: an overview discussing:
- WHY verifying benefits is important (rather than billing based on policy guidelines alone)
- the pros and cons of verifying benefits yourself vs. having your patients do it.
- I also link to comprehensive videos discussing billing guidelines for Cigna, Aetna, and United Healthcare.
- Video 2: common terminology you'll need to be familiar with to verify benefits:
- fully-funded vs. self-funded plans
- PPOs vs. EPOs vs. HMOs
- preventive vs. medical benefits
- prior/pre-authorizations
- Video 3: how to verify benefits yourself — the meat and potatoes of this course. It's eleven and a half minutes long, and discusses:
- the information you'll need on-hand before contacting the insurance company
- how to contact the insurance company
- how to use the Availity payer chat to verify benefits (if the insurance company offers it)
- how to make hold times less annoying
- what prompts to follow to get connected with a live representative
- how to go about effectively recording the information the insurance rep provides to you
- how to answer common questions the representative may ask you
- what to ask the insurance company representative
- what information you MUST obtain from the insurance representative
- a blank verification of benefits document for you to use when you verify, which you'll provide to your patient to communicate their benefits to them. The verification of benefits document includes a disclaimer that absolves you of financial responsibility in the even of a misquote of benefits (i.e., if the information you receive from the representative is wrong, it'll be the patient's responsibility to pay you)
- An example communication guidelines form, which also includes a disclaimer specifying that the patient is responsible for understanding how their insurance policy works
- Video 4: how to have your patient verify benefits. I provide you with a sample form to provide your patients, that outlines, step-by-step, exactly how they should go about verifying their own benefits (please change the wording slightly)
- Video 5: Closing thoughts, tying up a few loose ends. I also discuss a bit of philosophy (yes, philosophy) and perspective that will make the verification of benefits process easier
